フォートリーのリンウッド火災

今日もいつものように自転車でジョージワシントンブリッジを渡って帰宅。

と、様子がおかしい。

上空をヘリが飛んでいて消防車も通っていく。

帰ってからニュースを確認してみると、フォートリーにあるHマートという韓国系スーパーの裏手にあるアパートが火事で全焼したとのこと（以下、写真はツイッターより）。



ニュースによると、地下で発生した火災が5階建ての全フロアに燃え広がったとのこと（アメリカのアパートでは、地下にランドリーや物置といった共用スペースがあることが多い）。

A fire at an apartment building in Fort Lee has prompted the evacuation of hundreds, including the firefighters battling the flames.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich tells News 12 New Jersey that it is believed that the fire started in the basement and has since spread to all of the five floors of the building.

At least three firefighters suffered minor injuries while helping to evacuate residents. It is believed that all residents were able to safely evacuate the building after the fire started.

People who lived in the building were evacuated to the nearby senior center on Main Street. The American Red Cross was also responding to assist the tenants.

現場は地元では馴染みの韓国系スーパーの裏手にあるビル。



数百人が避難を余儀なくされたとのことだが、幸い死者は出ていないよう。



現段階では火災原因は不明とのことだが、最近ではニューヨークでも火事だけでなく、老朽化したガス管の爆発などの事故が起こっている。

以前もエッジウォーターで大火災があって生で燃えている現場を対岸から目撃したが、実際に自分の家が燃えたらと思うと身につまされる思いである。

ちなみに自分は全く同じビルではないが、同地域の別棟を以前内覧したこともあり、この近くに住んでいたかもしれないと思うと他人事ではない。

まだまだ寒い季節が続くので火の元には注意して過ごしたいものである。
